ghd's guides to Gwen Stefani, Madonna and Amy Winehouse's distinctive 'dos - plug your styler in and get practicing!
Amy’s brought the classic beehive up to date and made it her own by adding rough, tumbling curls...
1. Wash hair as normal, then apply a little ghd Obedience Cream and, using a large anti-static brush, blow-dry your hair, directing the airflow down for the best finish.
2. Once hair is dry, start at the nape of the neck and separate a section approximately 1 inch deep, clipping the rest of your hair out of the way. There’s no need to use a comb - it’s easier to just use your fingers.
3. Insert your ghd styler at the root and move downwards, once you reach halfway, slowly rotate it 180 degrees (imagine you’re curling a ribbon with a scissor blade.) There’s no need to grip tightly or pull hard.
4. Gently glide the styler downwards, holding the ends of the hair to guide the section between the ceramic plates. The slower you feed your hair through the styler, the more defined the curl. As you release each curl, wrap it around your finger to give it definition. Don’t worry if curls are different sizes or don’t start at the same level, as this looks more natural.
5. To achieve height, take the section in front of the backcombed area and smooth it over to create the beehive, adjust the height and then pin them into place with Kirby grips and apply ghd Fixation to hold everything in place.
6. To finish the style, create a rough centre parting and run fingers through the curls using a drop of serum. To create flicks at the sides of your face, rotate the styler 180 degrees away from you.
Gwen’s rockabilly quiff fuses ‘50s cool with a punky edge.
1. Cleanse, nourish and protect hair as normal, then apply smoothing balm and, using a large anti-static brush, blow dry hair, directing the airflow down for the best finish.
2. Once hair is completely dry, take small sections of hair and glide your styler down from root to tip, starting at the nape of the neck.
3. Lightly spray hair with hairspray for extra control and using a paddle brush, work hair into a low ponytail (remembering to leave a V section of hair at the front for the quiff), and secure with a snag-free elastic.
4. To hide the elastic, use a fine section of hair from the pony and wrap it around the elastic, securing with a Kirby grip.
5. To create the quiff, take the V section of hair and backcomb it gently, twist it back towards your head and then push forward to create the height of the quiff, securing it with a few Kirby grips.
6. Complete the look with a light spritz of ghd fixation spray all over for a rocking look which will last for hours.
The Farrah Fawcett-esque 'do from Madonna's Confessions tour is one of her most successful looks and easy to recreate.
1. Wash your hair as normal, then apply a little ghd Smoothing Balm and, using a large anti-static brush, blow dry your hair, directing the airflow down the hair for the best finish.
2. Once hair is completely dry, take small sections and glide your styler down from root to tip, starting at the nape of the neck.
3. To create the glamorous flicks take roughly 1-inch wide sections of hair at the front of your head and lightly mist them with ghd Creation Spray to ensure a long-lasting style.
4. Run the styler down these sections at the front of your head, once near the end of your hair rotate the styler 180 degrees away from your face to create the flicks.
